“In today’s Gospel reading the problem is, of course, not really handwashing. The problem is a tempting but misguided and inadequate ‘why’. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I’m afraid that the Pharisees and the Scribes in this story as in many other instances, are trying to trick Jesus. I’d like to think that they were concerned for the disciples’ welfare and hygiene, but I think they were trying to catch them behaving badly, breaking the rules. It is tempting for us, as I think it was for the Pharisees and the Scribes, it is tempting to care much more about being right than it is to care about each other and treating each other right.”
