“If we are really working toward an intimate relationship with God every day, such that the choices that we make fulfill God’s requirement to do justice and love kindness; if our actions show love for one another and mirror the forgiveness of our Savior; if all, or at least most, of our choices are working in partnership with God’s desire for human flourishing for all God’s people, it’s a time for real introspection. Our Christian calendar has us spend these forty days leading up to Easter in a kind of human imitation of Jesus’ own forty days in the desert, preparing himself for his own time of trial and judgment. And as I think about some of the choices that we have made as a society, choices that have created our nation’s system of mass incarceration, I find it ironic that we are a people who follow a God who was condemned as a criminal and executed on a cross.”
