The first part of the scripture is missing from this recording. The text reads: “Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.  As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he…”

From Kelly’s sermon:

“If we look at this story from a scholarly perspective, you have the Roman soldiers (‘Legion’) getting the boot from the King of Israel. Israel, in contrast is liberated from uncleaness and opression. Israel, as represented by this posessed man, is now reconciled and restored, free to live out Israel’s destiny as God’s chosen people.”

Read the Scripture:

Dr. Kelly Kandra Hughes, PhD, first came to Norfolk Church of Christ to attend a writers’ group. Thinking that everyone in the group was so nice, she decided to try a Sunday service and never looked back. She worked in higher education for many years, and after earning tenure and a promotion to associate professor of psychology at a suburban Chicago university, Kelly took a sabbatical, had a near death experience, and woke up to wonder of the world around her. She quit her job the following year, married Heath Hughes, the love of her life, and gave up 95% of her belongings so she and Heath could travel the country as professional pet and house sitters while she pursues her greatest professional passion: writing books. Kelly and Heath have been on a long-term housesitting job in Norfolk since September 2016.  If you ever see Kelly running across the street, you can be pretty sure it’s to pet a dog.
