The question that leaped out at me from the passage this morning in the interaction between Jesus and Nicodemus was Nicodemus’ question, “How can anyone be born after having grown old?” In other words — Jesus, leave me alone. I know who I am, I know what I like, I know what I don’t like. I have my habits, I have my routines. I do not wish for you to bring change into my life.” I think it’s fair to say that as a species we are not always open to change. I am not always open to and welcoming of change. But we know that, in truth, the status quo is death. If things remain exactly the way they are, they die. You cannot have life without change and growth, as difficult as they may be at times.
