A Norfolk Veteran’s Day Tradition
Botelle Elementary School has for many years been open on Veteran’s Day when many other schools close. The reason is that the school really dedicates that day to honoring our veterans. They practice music and reading in preparation for that day and invite veterans from Norfolk and surrounding towns to come to a special assembly where they present the program and offer a free lunch. Each veteran present is offered a chance to speak and let the children know a bit about their service. I always look forward to my invitation, prepared by one of the school children.
This year, of course, had to be different because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Mass assemblies are simply not a good idea, and this has indeed been a large assembly in years past. Nevertheless the preparations were made and the veterans were invited to watch the virtual online presentation shown below.
The children thank us for our service, and we thank them for their hard work in remembering the veterans.
Here’s a link to the video presentation.
